BLENDING: Colorizing a Greyscale Image (Method 2)
« Thread Started on Nov 6, 2004, 2:14pm »

Ok, I've improved a tad on colorizing images, so I decided I'd put up a new tutorial. It's all basically the same thing, just a couple new methods stuck in. ;)

For the images that are very small and have some numbers underneath the, click on them for the real size. ;D

First you'll want to get a greyscale image. I'll be using the Emma Watson one shown below.

1. Duplicate the original layer (Layers>>Duplicate) and go to Colors>>Adjust>>Color Balance. A box should pop up. Set your settings to something like mine.

2. The entire image should now be a yellow-ish color (shown below). Using the freehand selection tool, I'm going to erase Emma's hair, eyes, hat, clothes, and the background. The only thing that should be left colored is the skin. Make sure that you're top layer is selected when you're erasing!

3. Press Ctrl+D to deselect. Now duplicate the second layer. You should have three layers, Background, Copy of Background, and Copy of Copy of Background. Select the very top one (Copy of Copy..) and go to Effects>>Enhance Photo>>Manual Color Correction. Here, you can experiment and get the kind of effect you want.

4. She looks scary now, but don't panic! You can play around with the settings.

5. Merge all the layers together ( Layers>>Merge>>Merge All ). I'm going to color her hair now by selecting around her hair and using Shift + L. I set my hue to 21 and my saturation to 30.

6. Create a New Raster Layer (Layers>>New Raster Layer). Select around the lips. Use the Flood Fill Tool to fill in her lips.

7. For her hat, I just used Shift + L and set my Hue to 0 and my Saturation to 30.

8. Now for my favorite part, the eyes, or atleast the eyeshadow. For this pic, I decided to leave the eyes grey. Duplicate the layer and select around the eyes. Play around with the hues and saturations.

Here, I created a new raster layer and set it to soft light and added some black to darken the eyeshadow. When you're done, merge the layers together.

9. Now that the entire pic is basically colored, duplicate the layer and go to Effects>>Enhance Photo>>Automatic Saturation Enhancement. Play around with your settings.

10. Time to add some effects! I used a stock pic and erased the parts that covered Emma's face. Also, I used a pattern underneath. Here's the result.

11. Now merge all the layers together. Duplicate the layer and go to Effects>>Enhance Photo>>Manual Color Correction. Please note that Preserve Saturation is also checked!

Optional: I made a new raster layer, set it to exclusion, and filled it with a dark blue/green color. Then I merged those layers together, created a new one, and set it to overlay.

^^ With the optional part.

Once again, I have to state, don't always look back at this tutorial every time you do a colorization. Try and find your own way by choosing different options. Just experiment!! ;) Throw any questions this way!
